Matala Festos Gortys
Matala Gortys Phaistos
This time we set out for the south of Crete. Driving through beautiful scenery, we will visit Gortys, one of the most extensive archaeological sites in Greece, with an unbroken history of 6,000 years, with just some parts open to the public: the church of St Titus, the Odeon and the famous Plane Tree. Then will continue to our next stop at Phaestos, an important centre of Minoan civilization, and the most wealthy and powerful ancient city in southern Crete. Our last visit is the famous beach of Matala. In mythology, Matala is the place where Zeus swam ashore with the kidnapped Europa on his back before dragging her off to Gortyna and getting her pregnant with the future King Minos. The Minoans used Matala as their harbour for Phaestos and under the Romans it became the port for Gortyna. Nevertheless, for most people, Matala means only one thing: hippies. Back in the late 1960s – 1970s, this little town was a colony of the “flower children”, who lived in the caves that used to be former Roman tombs. Here we will enjoy the crystal waters, the warm sun and lunch by the sea, while later, we can explore the prehistoric caves, carved on the steep rocks of the area.
